Black Variety. Known by many different names Worldwide. Excellent in the Rhone Valley & Australia. It seems that its origin is not Persia as was thought, but that it grew spontaneously in between lesser grape varieties in the French Alps and Italy. In Spain, except rare exceptions it adapts very well in the dry Mediterranean climate. The first plantings of the variety in the Peninsula are from the beginning of the 80´s. The grape is medium sized, elliptic & purple coloured. For the obtaining of quality wine, the yield has to be very low. It gives very structured wines of long life that stand up very well to ageing in Oak. The wines possess aromas characteristic of black olives, tar, smoke & violets.
